NOTES FOR A STANDARD FOR DATABASE OF TEMPLES REUSED IN OR AS CHRISTIAN CHURCHES

Back

Christian church reusing the site or part of it (block 5--)

Since this is a database which gathers data about temples reused in or as christian churches, we need to include data about the church reusing the site. The block 5-- keeps all these data; currently it includes only the field 500, reporting the name of the church. The church reusing parts of a prechristian sacred site usually has been built on the same place of the site, that is more often the reused part, so the location of the church would be a repetition of block 2--.

The biggest problem is therefore the form of the name.

Form of the name

Choosing the form of the name of the church reusing a site rises the same questions than choosing the form of the deity’s name and of places: in order to help searching in database, it would be more appropriate that a person’s name, in this case the name of the saint to whom the church is dedicated, was called always in the same way, but the church’s name is also the name of a place, written on maps often in its original language. Since the name of the church is a personal name, it would be appropriate to use it in its original language, but searching the origin of each saint would be too hard work and apart from our aims; as name of place we should leave it in the form of the country where it is. Maybe an apt solution could be to include both the name in a common chosen form, to identify the person (since we are talking about christian churches, we can suppose the use of the Latin form) and in the original form to identify the place. This could be done dividing information in two fields or two subfields.
